Autumn ushers in a host of plant allergens that can irritate your throat. It also brings colder weather and overheated rooms, which can lead to strep throat. In this blog, we're getting to the bottom of what's making your throat ache and what to do about it.
Strep Throat
Strep throats are caused by contact with the highly contagious Streptococcal bacteria, which are especially plentiful in late fall. Along with sore throat, strep usually includes fever, pain while swallowing, swollen glands, red spots at the back of the tongue, red tonsils or white patches on the tonsils.
One or more of the symptoms means you should seek medical attention. A doctor can confirm via a throat culture, as well as prescribe antibiotics to cope with this bacterial illness.
Allergic or Cold-Related Sore Throat
Coughing is often a sure sign that you don’t have strep throat. In addition, itchy, watery eyes and runny nose also indicate that you’re having allergic irritation or the common cold -- as opposed to a bacterial infection such as strep throat.
In general, those who are susceptible to pollen, dust or pet dander may find that their throat because inflamed due to these irritants. In addition, post-nasal drip as a secondary reaction to allergies can also lead to throat inflammation. Often, home treatment with antihistamines can help, as can drinking warm water with honey.
Soothing an Aching Throat
Whatever the underlying cause of your aching throat, chances are that lowered immunity and/or environmental irritants can be a factor. When you’re on the mend, or just trying to stave off yet another bout, your spa or fitness center can be your best friend.
Warm, moist air is soothing for aching throats. If you’re not at a contagious stage, visit the steam room at your spa, and don't forget the benefits of lymphatic massage! And don’t forget to stop by their smoothie or juice bars! Cold fruit smoothies are especially soothing for recovering strep throats, and are bursting with antioxidants. Warm herbal tea with honey helps for sore throats related to allergies and colds.
Of course, once you feel up to it, a class featuring yoga or light cardio is a great way to get your immune system jump-started to ward off future throat pain, while sweating out your current toxins!
