Curling your eyelashes may seem simple enough, but the wrong technique can cause lashes to break, crimp or prematurely fall out. Fortunately, it’s easy to avoid these makeup disasters by learning how to properly use an eyelash curler. Once you’ve mastered the right techniques, you can use your device to make your eyes instantly appear wider and more alert.

Curl Your Lashes Before Using Mascara

It’s important to curl your lashes in the right order when applying makeup. You’ll first want to apply your eyeshadow and eyeliner and let it dry. Next, curl your lashes, followed by your mascara application. Before curling your lashes, be sure that they are clean and dry, as curling wet lashes can result in crimped or bent eyelashes.

Clamp at the Base of the Eyelash

When curling your lashes, open the eyelash clamp and get as much of the lashes in-between the clamps as possible. To achieve the full effect of the curler, clamp the eyelash curler down at the base of the eyelash directly below where the lashes meet the eyelid. Always hold the eyelash curler so that the clamp is parallel to your eyelashes.

Hold the Clamp Closed for 5 Seconds

With the clamp held shut gently, hold the eyelash curler in place for five seconds. Keep your hand steady to avoid pulling and damaging your eyelashes. Depending on the thickness of your lashes, you may not always get the volume you desire during the first round of curling. For extra volume, repeat the process and hold for an addition five seconds.

Curl the Lashes in Sections

Some eyelashes curlers cause the lashes to appear bent or crimped. To avoid this look, try curling your lashes in sections. Begin at the base of the eyelashes and hold, then work your way down slowly, clamping at various sections on the lashes and holding for five seconds. Finish at the tips of the lashes to create a softened, non-crimped appearance.

Many women desire long, thick lashes, and an eyelash curler is an easy way to achieve this look. However, it’s important to learn how to properly use your eyelash curler to avoid damaging your delicate lashes. Once you’ve learned the right techniques, you can easily complete a wide range of makeup looks.
